Thyolo Council offices, Zomba Stadium impress Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera has heaped praises on various development players for the role they play towards the realisation of various projects the Malawi Government is implementing nationwide.

He said this yesterday in Thyolo during the inauguration of a new K7.4 billion Thyolo District Council multi-storey office complex and the Zomba Stadium in Zomba City.

Chakwera hailed the new structure, whose construction started in 2017 with government funding, as the best his administration has built this far.

“In the whole Malawi, this is the best district council office complex that my government has constructed throughout my administration. For this reason, I would like to thank all those that played a role in this project,” said Chakwera.

The four-storey building, constructed by China Civil Contractors, is designed to accommodate various government ministries, departments and agencies, including the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.

The modern complex has replaced district offices constructed during the colonial era.

But Chakwera lambasted some opposition political figures whose identities he did not disclose for saying that his administration should not take credit for constructing the office complex.

“There are some people who went around this district, telling people that my administration did not construct these offices. I didn’t know that politicking in the country has reached this stage that people can be made to hate me politically. This is really bad,” he said.

Later, the President inaugurated a 20 000-capacity Zomba Stadium in the former administrative capital where he promised to construct more similar structures nationwide once re-elected into office in next Tuesday’s election.

Following the inauguration, the stadium, whose upgrading works were initially expected to be completed in 2020, will host some elite sports activities for the first time since its closure years ago.

After the stadium inauguration, Chakwera embarked on a whistle-stop tour on his way to Mangochi. He made the last stop at Namwera Trading Centre where he addressed people.
